Two new laboratories thanks to the NAWA Polish Returns Programme
17.10.2020

New laboratories researching pathogen-host interactions will be set up at IBB PAS due to the NAWA Polish Returns Programme winners:  Dr Michał Wandeland Dr Maciej Nogalski.

NAWA –  Polish Returns Programme

Dr Michał Wandel, currently working at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge UK, will join the IBB to lead the laboratory investigating the molecular mechanisms of innate immunity and inflammation. Dr Wandel plans to focus his research on host-pathogen interaction during bacterial and fungal infection.

Dr Maciej Nogalski is currently working at Princeton University, USA. At IBB PAS, Dr Nogalski will lead the laboratory investigating the molecular mechanisms of how viruses exploit non-coding satellite repeat RNAs with a long term aim of understanding the biological roles of this novel class of regulatory RNAs in other pathogenic states, i.e. cancer.
Launch of laboratories is planned on the second half of 2021. These two laboratories will bolster host-pathogen interections studies at IBB.

We congratulate both laureates and wish spectacular success in their research!

IBB PAS researchers honoured with the Prime Minister Award
17.10.2020

Prof. Wojciech Bal and Dr Roman Szczęsny are the winners of the Prime Minister Award for life achievements and achievements constituting the post-doctoral thesis, respectively.

Prime Minister Awards

Dr Roman Szczęsny, was awarded for the highly-rated scientific achievement, which constitutes the footing of the post-doctoral degree's conferment.
Dr Roman Józef Szczęsny: "RNA degradation and surveillance in human mitochondria" (medicine).
Submitted by the Director of the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences.
Awarded for the research of great importance for recognizing mitochondria biology and discovering innovative mechanisms according to which the mitochondria affect cell fate.

Prof. Wojciech Bal was awarded for the life achievements (chemistry).
Submitted by the Director of the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences.
Awarded for the development and explanation of the mechanism of the reaction of interactions on the molecular and cellular levels between proteins and metals (the new-generation drugs in Alzheimer's disease).

PASIFIC fellowship programme
20.05.2020

PASIFIC (Polish Academy of Sciences’ Individual Fellowships: Innovation & Creativity) is a new fellowship programme at the Polish Academy of Sciences, co-financed by the European Union MSCA COFUND Programme.  It will provide 50 scientists of any nationality with an opportunity to gain two years of research experience at one of the institutes  of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS).
